Specialization in education led Jesuits to roles as theologians of the 16th Century, including as members of the School of Salamanca, whose Jesuit members mostly took pro-market positions on free enterprise. D’après Bolzano, une proposition est logiquement analytique si et seulement si elle est soit logiquement valide, soit logiquement non valide. Bolzano dit aussi parfois qu’une proposition est logiquement valide si et seulement si elle est et reste vraie sous toute variation simultanée et uniforme de ses parties non logiques. C’est essentiellement la même définition que donne Quine dans son article « Carnap and Logical Truth » où il attribue à ce dernier l’idée qu’un énoncé logiquement vrai est un énoncé au (...) sein duquel seuls les termes logiques sont essentiels. Mais qu’en est-il des propositions et des énoncés vrais qui sont composés exclusivement de parties logiques ? Selon la définition précédente, elles s’avèreraient toutes logiquement valides ou logiquement vraies. Une proposition telle que « Il y a quelque chose » n’est toutefois manifestement pas logiquement valide selon Bolzano. La définition courante de la validité logique doit être modifiée de manière à répondre aux intuitions bolzaniennes. Dans cet article, je propose une telle modification.A proposition is logically analytic according to Bolzano if and only if it is either logically valid or logically non-valid. And a proposition is sometimes said to be logically valid according to Bolzano if and only if it is true and remains true under all simultaneous and uniform variations of all of its non-logical parts. Basically the same definition is provided by Quine in his paper “Carnap and Logical Truth” where he attributes to Carnap the view that a logically true sentence is a true sentence which involves only logical words essentially. But, what about true propositions and sentences which are composed exclusively of logical parts ? Due to the definition mentioned above, all of them will trivially turn out as logically valid or logically true. A proposition like “There is something”, however, is clearly not logically valid according to Bolzano. The common definition of logical validity must be modified in order to match Bolzano’s intuitions. In this paper, such a modification is presented. (shrink)

Nos connaissances sur l'humain, sur la vie, sur l'univers, sont en pleine expansion. Elles sont aussi séparées et dispersées. Comment les relier? Comment affronter des problèmes qui sont tout à la fois complexes, fondamentaux, intellectuels et vitaux? Comment nous situer dans l'aventure de la vie et dans celle de l'univers, en tenant compte du fait que l'humain est intérieur à l'univers et que l'univers est intérieur à l'humain? Clinical responses to dopamine replacement therapy for individuals with Parkinson’s disease are often difficult to predict. We characterized changes in MDS-UPDRS motor factor scores resulting from a short-duration L-Dopa response, and investigated how the inter-subject clinical differences could be predicted from motor cortical magnetoencephalography. MDS-UPDRS motor factor scores and resting-state MEG recordings were collected during SDR from twenty individuals with a PD diagnosis. We used a novel subject-specific strategy based on linear support vector machines to quantify motor cortical oscillatory frequency (...) profiles that best predicted medication state. Motor cortical profiles differed substantially across individuals and showed consistency across multiple data folds. There was a linear relationship between classification accuracy and SDR of lower limb bradykinesia, although this relationship did not persist after multiple comparison correction, suggesting that combinations of spectral power features alone are insufficient to predict clinical state. Factor score analysis of therapeutic response and novel subject-specific machine learning approaches based on subject-specific neuroimaging provide tools to predict outcomes of therapies for PD. Infant and young child electrophysiology studies have provided information regarding the maturation of face-encoding neural processes. A limitation of previous research is that very few studies have examined face-encoding processes in children 12–48 months of age, a developmental period characterized by rapid changes in the ability to encode facial information. The present study sought to fill this gap in the literature via a longitudinal study examining the maturation of a primary node in the face-encoding network—the left and right fusiform gyrus. (...) Whole-brain magnetoencephalography data were obtained from 25 infants with typical development at 4–12 months, and with follow-up MEG exams every ∼12 months until 3–4 years old. Children were presented with color images of Face stimuli and visual noise images that served as Non-Face stimuli. Using distributed source modeling, left and right face-sensitive FFG evoked waveforms were obtained from each child at each visit, with face-sensitive activity identified via examining the difference between the Non-Face and Face FFG timecourses. Before 24 months of age the face-sensitive FFG M290 response was the dominant response, observed in the left and right FFG ∼250–450 ms post-stimulus. By 3–4 years old, the left and right face-sensitive FFG response occurred at a latency consistent with a face-sensitive M170 response ∼100–250 ms post-stimulus. Face-sensitive left and right FFG peak latencies decreased as a function of age, and with an adult-like FFG latency observed at 3–4 years old. Study findings thus showed face-sensitive FFG maturational changes across the first 4 years of life. Whereas a face-sensitive M290 response was observed under 2 years of age, by 3–4 years old, an adult-like face-sensitive M170 response was observed bilaterally. Future studies evaluating the maturation of face-sensitive FFG activity in infants at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders are of interest, with the present findings suggesting age-specific face-sensitive neural markers of a priori interest. Reiteradamente, ao longo de sua obra, Heidegger referiu-se ao opúsculo Sobre a essência da verdade, cuja primeira elaboração data de 1930. Chega a dizer, em entrevista ao L’Express , ser esse trabalho a "dobradiça" entre Heidegger I e Heidegger II, inseparáveis um do outro. A questão da história é nele abordada na sua relação com a verdade do ser, mais exatamente, com a idéia de que a continuidade dos eventos que concerne a essa verdade está ontologicamente ligada a uma recusa (...) original do ser a uma inteligibilidade plena ou definitiva. Dessa recusa original decorre a liberdade e, simultaneamente, a possibilidade do erro, a errância; decorre, igualmente, a possibilidade de completo desnorteamento. Tomando essas teses como ponto de partida, é possível afastar da concepção heideggeriana de história quaisquer traços de processualismo ou teleologia, e, sobretudo, reconciliá-la com uma idéia simultaneamente geral e "concreta" de alteridade. É o que aqui se pretende.Over and over along his works Heidegger has mentioned the opuscule On the Essence of Truth, whose first elaboration dates from 1930. In an interview to L'Express he even comes to say about this work that it is a "hinge" between Heidegger I and Heidegger II, inseparable from each other. The text deals with the question of history in its reference to the truth of being, more precisely, to the idea that the continuity of events related to this truth is ontologically tied to an original refusal of being to a full or conclusive intelligibility. What is brought out of this original refusal is freedom but, at the same time, the possibility of error, errancy; it also follows the possibility of complete disorientation. Taking these thesis as a starting point, it is possible to move away from the heideggerian conception of history any traces of processualism or teleology and, above all, to reconcile it with an idea both broad and "concrete" of alterity. In conclusion, then, we have tried to show that Drug actions can be predicted and described best on a probabilistic basis and information theory offers a suitable framework for such predictions. Drug actions are fundamentally of the all-or-none type involving the choice between two alternatives and these choises are therefore measurable by binary digits. Drug actions are not absolutely but only relatively specific and such specificity can be measured on the basis of information theory by an array of suitable correlation (...) data. Synergisms and antagonisms can best be explained and measured by considering them as intersymbol influences in communications. A theory of drug action based on information theory is more comprehensive and simpler than any theory based on the principles of classical physics and chemistry.However, these conclusions provide only the general basis for future detailed studies of various drug groups which will probably require the collaboration of chemists and pharmacologists as well as biological mathematicians to produce practical results.Der Verfasser bespricht die verschiedenen Probleme der Drogenwirkung und der Reizwirkung im allgemeinen und kommt zu den folgenden Schlussfolgerungen: Die Wirkung der Drogen kann am besten auf Grundlage der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie vorhergesagt und beschrieben werden und die mathematische Informationstheorie bietet einen befriedigenden Rahmen für solche Voraussagungen.
